Getting started

"So the job is custodian and maintenance," Manny says. "Mostly custodian, tell you the truth. You do what you got to do, whatever it takes. Floors, garbage, all that stuff, and fixing what needs fixing. It stays pretty busy. The girls in housekeeping take care of the rooms, except for fixing stuff of course. I'm gonna put you with another guy for the first few days, show you the ropes. It ain't hard, but you gotta watch some of these girls. They'll try to get you to do stuff you shouldn't be doing. Anyways, lemme get Rafael in here an' he can show you around." He picks up his phone and punches in a few numbers saying few words and hanging up.

A moment later the door opens and a young man steps into the room. He's wiry and agile looking, his face a complex of sharp angles and flashing teeth.

"Mornin' Jefe," he says to Manny, then looks at you with an appraising glance. "Hola. Rafael Gomez," he says holding out a hand.

"Pedro Calvera," you answer. "Good to meet you."

"Show him around, Rafe," Manny says. "He's gonna be bunking with you, so show him the room too. Good to have you aboard Pedro."
