Chapter 3 by Yabusa Yabusa

Which robotic design interests you for phase binding?

Genesis vending unit

One of the largest moneymakers for the Yabusa Robotics division is the Genesis unit. Genesis is a vending and delivery system developed at first to be able to provide easy access to cold beverages, but the Genesis units quickly expanded to all sorts of delivery companies, from mail and packages to 3D-printed objects that can be provided on-demand by someone simply strolling around.

The structure is simple: a module filled with objects to vend or deliver is brought out of phase, and affixed to the vending module that is installed within the stomach of a Genesis user. With a sliding panel on the stomach as the only necessary indicator of a Genesis phasebound user, these mobile vendor machines are very well-hidden in everyday life.

For someone using a Genesis to vend items in a typical configuration, their workday is fairly simple: they get a ping on their phone saying someone nearby would like a vended item, they approach, the client makes selection and pays by phone, and they are handed the vended item. Perfectly functional, but the kinds of companies that sell soda want to be seen... they want to advertise their presence, and not wait for people to figure out that they can order something on their phone!

And so, companies started trying to one-up each other to increase brand awareness via their 'ambassadors', as they started calling their Genesis vending employees. Remembering that sex sells, suddenly they were being issued tight, low-cut and cropped uniforms with logos all over the fabric, making it clear that these were vending units wandering around. Employees were encouraged to flirt, to be friendly with people to convince them to buy more items. Some went so far as to install chip reader technology in the cleavage of the women with Genesis machines, all as a way to one-up the competition. And then they were immediately one-upped again, as pin pads were installed right in the chest for people to touch... and so on.

The Genesis users started joking that at some point, the companies would try to convince them to sleep with the customers as an incentive to buy their soda. ...Surely it was a joke, right?

Other Genesis users fared far better, but they were fewer and further between to deliver some of the more niche items that needed vending, meaning they had to often be on the move to find their customers. Often that simply meant lots of walking or bicycling, but some of the more successful Genesis users splurge on some of Yabusa's hoverblade boots, one of the faster means of travel along the ground.

All in all, however, Genesis vending units are some of the most flexible machines Yabusa makes. Most of the mechanical parts are all out of phase with the user while the vending door is the same size for everything, so changing to different items to dispense was almost trivial, as long as they had access to a Phase Binder and a fresh vending module to install.

With all that in mind, are you a Genesis user? Or do you know someone phasebound to one? What lengths do they have to go through to make a sale?

Who's the Genesis user, or the person who knows one?
