Promptly at eight o’clock, Commander Smith entered the building on base that served for social functions, such as wedding receptions for Officers or their families, graduation parties, or anniversary dinners. The Solar Guard was more than a job; its members were part of an extended family.

Galileo Hall also served for semi-official get-togethers as well. Ship’s parties, dinners to celebrate an Officer’s promotion, or cocktails for civilians would frequently be held there.

In this case, the civilians being entertained were members of the Governing Council that ruled “the Big Three”, Earth, Mars, and Venus, as well as the smaller colonies on Jupiter and Saturn’s moons along with Asteroid settlements and space stations. Also present were several industrialists that supplied equipment to the Solar Guard as well a sprinkling of local politicians.
