Chapter 4 by mrleedles mrleedles

Step inside?

Four years of hell.

As you step through the door, you instantly recognize the location as your old school, specifically the cafeteria. Looking around for a few moments, you see yourself. A much skinnier, much more optimistic you, standing in front of a girl...and that is when the memories of this scene flood into your mind. It wasn't your first rejection, it wasn't your last rejection, but it was the one that stung the most. You watch as nameless gray faces surround you and your first high school crush as you pour your heart out to her...

And she stands up from her seat and rushes away.

You feel a flood of emotions hit you: despair, misery, anger, grief...and then you watch the scene repeat again, and again, and again, and again, each iteration being worse than the first. By the end of it, you are curling up on the ground of this recollection, trying desperately not to lose it and failing. As you get another glimpse of the girl as she runs away, you remember how much you truly believed you loved her.

"Ch...Ch...Chloe....." You mutter weakly, and feel your depression fading into sheer anger, and even the atmosphere around you seems to get more tense, like the ground could crack open any moment and send people careening into the abyss below.

"You...you should have...you should've b-been mine! W-We...we had so much...I had...I have..." You jolt upright, and the sensation of just standing feels unreal to you.

As the dream loops again, you begin walking more towards the center of the event, and the closer you get, the more your old self begins to fade. As you finally get to the center, you seem to replace your old self, and you stare at the girl you had fawned over. Her body wasn't anything tremendous, no curves to her and a very short stature, but it was her personality that drew you towards her.

She clicked so well with you, to the point that you believed she was the perfect one, the soul mate of your life. But now that you stand before her, it feels hollow. Like you were going after someone lesser than you just to go after someone. You look at her, and realize that the scene seems to be waiting on you, waiting for you to speak.

Can you say anything?
