Diane perks at your words. "Makes sense?"

"Yeah. Why Terry was so excited about coming to this party. You're gorgeous."

She laughs. "Oh, is that so? You think he came here just to hook up with me?"

"Without a doubt, but I'll save you the trouble. He's a good guy and all, but he's not in your league."

"And you are?" she says.

"That's your call, not mine."

Diane looks you over, glancing between you and someone in the distance. "Well, this suddenly got a little interesting. Fine, I'll bite. I'm gonna give you... say... ten minutes. Impress me and I'll change my plans."

"Plans?"

She grins. "Like I'm gonna tell you. It's part of the game. I mean... you're just the wingman, right? I'm giving you a chance to prove you deserve to be in the cockpit. Besides, your honesty tells me Terry is just trying to use you to get rid of Sadie so he could get some action. Sadie is like... my best friend. I dragged her to this party to find her an awesome guy, but it can't be helped if the guy I find is more my type, right?"

You have no argument there. "I had a feeling you'd understand. So you didn't actually tell Terry this is a date, right?"

"Exactly. He just assumed that on his own."

That doesn't really surprise you, but maybe you should come up with some sort of compromise.
