First Day of School

The first walk to school is always the worst. I haven't gotten used to the school sleep schedule, I have to walk in morning weather and my backpack weighs a ton. Despite all uncomfortable variables, I have to admit I was excited. This was the last year of school for me, except for college obviously. But this was it, my final year to be a high school student. I found myself getting lost in daydreams of my year ahead and was interrupted by a voice calling out to me. It was a female voice that I knew I recognized but something about it was different...

"Yuza!" I heard the voice call again. I turn around and see a girl jogging after me. I try to make out her face but it isn't until she is right in front of me that I realize who it is, "Iana?"

My childhood friend runs up to me and hugs me tightly, burying her face in my shoulder. After I recover from my small state of shock I wrap my arms around her and laugh, "Holy crap, Iana. How are you here?" I ask her. She lets go and looks up at me, smiling and says, "I moved back." Still confused I ask her how but she just changes the subject and we start walking to school.

"I never thought I'd see you again. How come you didn't tell me you were back?" I ask her. She takes out her phone and waves it a little saying, "I kinda dropped my phone in the ocean a couple years ago..." I give her a confused look, "I know it's stupid but I'm not exactly the best at remembering phone numbers. I barely know my own." I playfully punch her arm and call her a dork. She just laughs and looks at me, "You look..." she squints, "...older." she says. "Oh, thanks." I say, rolling my eyes. She scoffs, "That's not what I meant dummy. You look grown up. Not like my little partner in crime."

Partner in crime, that's what we used to call each other. That kinda hit me weird and I felt myself crack a smile. I look ahead and come up with a witty comeback...
