Empty Rooms

The staricase opened up onto the second floor into a long hallway, with a series of doors on either side. It was a large and open space, lined with windows, and draped in an expensive purple fabric. When Robin saw the space, she smiled.

"This way" Robin said, grabbing Becky's sleeve and half guiding, half dragging her down the left passageway. Becky scrambled to keep up, trying to play the part of an enchanted young noblewoman, being pulled along by her lover-not a peasant who would be kicked out and imprisoned before they let her set foot on the carpet.

Robin quickly pushed open the first door, revealing a sitting room with a few lavish couches and chairs. The pair hurried inside, shutting the door behind them and rifling through the drawers for any documentation. A few minutes later, they were passing back through the door emptyhanded, with Robin already excitedly dragging Becky to the next room. The blonde only just managed to get a glance down the hall to make sure they were still alone before Robin pushed her through the next doorway.

The proceeded down most of the hallway like this, with unproductive search after unproductive search.

"Maybe it's about time we try something else?" Becky said, leaning against the door frame as Robin finished flipping through the last pages of a book that they had learned to be the journal of some nobleman's son, documenting his various affairs with the castle servants and local village girls.

"We've almost got it, I just know it!" Robin insisted, reaching for Becky's arm to start pulling her to the next room.

Becky stopped her with an arm on the girl's shoulder. "I don't think he lives here. These are the guest rooms, so as a servant of Lady Dieudonne, he probably lives elsewhere in the castle."

"Just one more room, okay?" Robin's face was a picture of determination. She slipped her arm free of Becky's grasp and made for the door. "The last one looks more important. If we don't find anything, then we can go back."

Then she flitted out the door like a breeze.

Becky sighed. This girl might prove useful in the long run to bringing down Lady Dieudonne, but they had wasted so much time up here already--and for nothing! She picked up the book from where Robin had left it on the edge of a four poster bed and moved it back to the table it had been set on when they arrived, carefully adjusting it's angle so the young man would be none the wiser that his journal had been scoured.

She considered that, if she were to head back downstairs right now, Robin might not even notice her absence for several minutes--if at all. Becky could be back by Fuu's side, helping with the actual mission instead of on some fruitless wild goose chase after some man who's name she had never even heard before...

But no. She had given her word. Becky shut the door carefully behind her as she made her way after Robin, following the girl through the ornate double doors of the final room.
