Emily is embarrassed (main story)

Emily froze when her fingers grazed something unmistakably firm beneath the damp fabric of Kevin's slacks. Her breath caught mid-motion, the disinfectant wipe dangling uselessly from her fingertips as realization crashed over her like icy water. She jerked her hand back so fast she smacked her elbow against the armrest. "Oh God—I didn't—" The words tumbled out in a mortified whisper, her cheeks flaming as she stared fixedly at the safety card lodged in the seatback pocket.

Kevin exhaled sharply through his nose, adjusting his posture with deliberate stiffness. "It's fine," he muttered, plucking the ruined wipe from her limp fingers and tossing it onto the tray table. The ice cubes had melted into sad little puddles on the leather seat between them. Emily couldn't decide whether to laugh or crawl into the overhead bin.

An eternity passed before the flight attendant's voice crackled overhead, announcing their initial descent into Atlanta. Emily seized the distraction like a lifeline. "We should—" she gestured vaguely at their seatbelts, her voice two octaves higher than usual. Kevin nodded stiffly, his knuckles pale where they gripped his knees.

The remaining twenty minutes of the flight were punctuated by the kind of polite small talk usually reserved for funerals and dental appointments. Emily commented on the weather—unseasonably warm for October, wasn't it?—while Kevin made a show of checking his watch three times in as many minutes. When the wheels finally screeched against the tarmac, Emily nearly wept with relief.
