Chapter 9 by brevdravis brevdravis

How did I defuse this situation?

Drive them back to the nearest city. (The End) (Another Realistic Ending)

I looked at the damp and dismal terrain. There was no way that I was going to enjoy my own holiday with this crap. Heck, we hadn't even gone near the place, but if this was the state of things, I didn't want to wait around for our own cabin to have a tree through it. I wouldn't know the first thing about what to do then.

"Yeah, I know what you mean." I looked again at the smashed steel of the trailer, and winced as I saw a piece of metal shift with an audible creak under the wood. "Everyone for getting back on the road say aye."

The chorus of yes from all three women was more than enough to get me turning the engine on and turning the car around. Thoughts of room service ran through my head, and one decent night would be better than a whole week in some falling tree infested rathole miles away from the nearest decent internet connection. The bump of the tires over a particularly deep dip brought me out of the thought, and I concentrated on just trying to avoid another sheet of rain that fell from between the close packed trees, and their thick undergrowth which nobody seemed to have touched for years.

It was an absolute joy to find the highway again, and my heart felt better with every mile we drove away from the shattered wreckage. I turned north, away from our expected vacation rental, and towards civilization and a decent hotel.

"Ok, so... you gonna call yoah uncle Jack and tell 'im about thah traila?" The redheaded woman whose name I didn't really remember spoke from the back seat to her partner, who seemed to still be somewhat fuming.

"You know how many times he tried to get that tree removed?" Helen grumbled, biting her lip and looking out at the ocean and rain as it whizzed by. "Crap. So, uh, yeah, sorry about the... disasters. Just one after another."

"Hey, Ah got to spend it with you..." The woman's voice from the back seat was punctuated with the soft sound of a kiss once again.

"I'll be in my bunk." I smirked over at my wife, who merely rolled her eyes in response to my lowered voice and grin.

"Seriously?" Kaila remarked. "Not the time, Brent."

"I was thinking we forget the cabin," I remarked, gesturing to the rain and changing the subject. Clearly Kaila was NOT in the mood. "If it's anything like their trailer, I don't want to stay down here with this going on."

"Yeah, so much for your brilliant second honeymoon location." Kaila grumbled, "This was supposed to be our second honeymoon, but somebody can't check a weather app before booking."

"I'm pretty sure we can get the money back." I commented. "We say that we found it unlivable, due to the weather, and use the hotel receipt as proof."

"You're going to lie?" Helen remarked from the back seat with a disbelieving expression.

"No, we have the proof with the rain and the fact we never showed. If we get a hotel receipt, usually, whoever is on the other end of the line will fold." I remarked, happily thinking about getting a full refund. "Might have to take credit, but I'm cool with rescheduling for some decent weather."

"Ok, so... where are you planning on dropping us?" Helen asked. "I mean, thanks for the lift back to town. Ow... Charlotte, didn't have to elbow me." The aggressive woman in the back seat asked me with a suspicious expression.

"Well, I know there's a Motel on the other side of the hill which usually is pretty dead this time of year." I commented. "Don't have any major events going on this weekend, and the rich jerks had their car worship last week, so should be back down to local prices."

"Well, think you can swing us a discount with your military ID, babe?" Kaila asked with a grin. "Number one advantage of dating a veteran."

"Don't I know it!" Charlotte laughed from the back seat as we pulled to a stop near the first Carmel crossroad. A parade of cars crossed the highway as we idled and Kaila made quiet conversation about prices, apps, and various other topics I really had no interest in. This was why I usually didn't come along with Kaila and her girlfriends in the first place. They were incredibly boring to me, and my talk of film and games were probably just as boring to them. If I ever had trouble sleeping, all I had to do was ask Kaila about one of her corporate events, or nights out with girlfriends. Always boring, always the same, and I'm out like a light.

It took only about another hour to finally secure a couple little rooms on opposite ends of a brown motel on the end of a strip in Marina. The place had no towels, and we had to go down twice to get a remote for the tv that worked, but at least the shower had hot water, and the bed was clean. The older lady and her husband behind the counter had been of course properly apologetic and polite about the errors, and I dealt with it. It was after all, just a simple mistake, and these things tended to happen.

"So... I'm planning the Honeymoon next time." Kaila remarked when she finally got out of the shower and noted that I'd flipped on an inane cop show.

"Sounds good." I mumbled, concentrating on Ice-T and his interrogation of an obvious villain. You can always tell the villain on this show by when they arrest the guy. If it's in the first half hour, it's never the guy, and it was totally one of the ones that would be using a surprise defense in court.

"Oh, I heard from Carla..."

"That's nice..."

"... this whole thing with the faculty speech codes... these dudes kidnap kids and teach em' to play piano... So, was thinking that Becky, you know that girl I used to hang out with? Anyway... Then they break their fingers before the big recital... Brent? ... Are you even listening to... Forget it..."

I don't remember when I fell asleep, but the sound of the tv in the background was a comforting noise as I did so. I'd had trouble for a long time sleeping, and I found that having noise of some kind on at all times as I did so helped. Was a lot easier when you sleep alone as much as I did.
