Chapter 19
by dawan
The next Friday
Double date
You and Karen go out with Bobby and Amber. You and Karen have talked every day for the last six days. Amber has to be home early as she has a basketball mini camp where she is helping fifth grade girls on Saturday morning. After Bobby kisses Amber goodnight, he meets Joe and Tom at his dad's house. His dad is a truck driver and is over a thousand miles away. Bobby is at your house (next door) more than his own. Your mom cooks for him and refers to him as her second son (even though he is a month older than you). You would hang with your friends except you and Karen want to be alone.
Your mom is home but figures it is just Bobby alone at home. Your Uncle is at his place and told you not to stop by as he is entertaining a lady friend. Karen is wearing perfume from the green bottle and it smells wonderful. She shows that the ad called it 'Night of Intrigue'. You read the ad and it changes to say that Erica isn't pregnant from her time with you and she has forgotten it like it was a crazy dream. The article then says that you will forgot about ever being with Erica after tonight and then the writing changes back to a perfume ad. You are wondering where to take Karen and park when you get a text. It is from an unknown number but you know right away who it is.
"Durvick, check all texts, Big, Bad, Juan."
You know that it is Jon Smith, and he feels the need to be cautious. He is probably using a burner phone. 'durvick' is your nickname from when you were eight years old and in Cub Scouts with Jon. It is derived from Kevin Durant and Kevin Harvick. Jon's dad is a huge Texas fan and at that age Jon would give you every last name of a famous Kevin (The Bacon era was delicious, The Hart, not so loving). You both liked the smart ass Harvick when you were young and were glad to see 'Happy' finally win a championship. 'Big, bad' is from an old song about a miner who was real tough named John. 'Juan' sounded Mexican, gangster, a little like 'John', and cool to you and Jon, two of the cleanest cut, white, eight year old boys in all of America ten years ago. 'Texts', means email as this is a text, email less likely to be checked quickly by anyone (probably on Jon's end).
While he called you Durvick, you know BIG J (Kevin "Big" Jonson, you wish you had some of the money those Big Johnson shirts made) is how he has you on his cell. You two have practiced this spy protocol for years. You know that he is spooked and that he deleted his text or destroyed the phone after the text. You pull over and get online using your uncle's business laptop. You don't see any new mail on your generic hotmail account until you hit refresh and then see;
D. camping spot two, on the fly, ready.
You take Karen home as it is on the way, and tell her you owe her big, but you have to cut the night short. You explain to Karen that you have to help an old friend that is in big trouble. You promise to make it up to her tomorrow night or next weekend. Karen says fine as your loyalty to your friends is one of the traits that she likes best. You then drive to the north Green River bridge. You slow down as you are about to cross the bridge. Jon pops up from the brush, and gets into the van undetected, and before he is in his seat he says go toward Woocottville. You removed the interior light bulbs that would light up the van when the door opened after you said good night to Karen. The door is oiled and opens silently as you and your friends do a lot of sneaking around.
Jon tells you he almost got killed with Chad Peabody outside of Northville. (Northville is the unofficial name of the bad neighborhood of Smalltown). He was with Chad for what he thought was going to be a purchase of just a half an ounce of pot for each. Chad is 23 and not Jon's usual pot dealer. Josh Nickolas is his usual dealer but Josh and his half brother Arron are currently in jail from their actions at the cottage party last week. Jon wasn't sure if it was five pounds or fifty but it was a lot more pot than just personal use. He saw that a few of the guys had what appeared in the bad light to be **** weapons. Chad pulled a gun when they were about 50 yards from the contact point. He gave Jon a hand gun and said "We're taking the whole stash." Jon was backing away as Chad was running in. A gun fight ensued and Chad was likely killed.
Jon wants you to run him up towards Capital City to his cousin's old abandoned farm. His dad left an old pick up there that was used for getting parts at the Capital City truck terminal. He will borrow the truck and get a parking ticket or speed ten over the speed limit tomorrow morning to establish that he was there all night. You ask him how he got to Northville and to the bridge. He tells you he was riding in Chad's car and no one should think or know that he was in the car or Northville tonight. He walked over five miles to get to the bridge. There is an old abandoned railroad bridge about a mile from where you picked Jon up. It is just up river from a tall dam and the water under the middle of the bridge is over fifty feet deep. Jon threw the gun and the burner phone in the deepest spot. He and you talk to stay awake on the almost four hour drive up the freeway. You stop at the last all night gas station before the farm. Jon gives you cash to fill your gas tank and get several energy drinks to stay awake on the long drive back to Green River City.
What happened to Chad?
