Chapter 122

What's next?
Demons
From the uncommon and rare categories, a lot of the armour pieces dropped. I suppose it makes sense, given that I did pick the class perk to increase the drop rate of armour. We got the boots, gauntlets, chest plate and helmet of light. The set of armour is incomplete but still pretty decent.
The enchantments aren’t anything particularly special either. Resizing, comfort, light weight and manoeuvrability enchantments are all useful, but nothing special. One of the enchantments allows the user to light up a darkened space, which is kinda cool. The protection the armour gives is really good in comparison to anything else we’ve come across so far.
“I vote Skylar gets these.” I put out there. Ivy and Mia agree instantly. “What, why? It fits much better with Mia than me!” Skylar protests. “Agreed hun, but you’re the one here most in need of better armour.” Ivy points out. “What she said! We want you to be safe, dingus.” Mia agrees. I chuckle at Mia’s phrasing while we wait for a response.
“Fine.” She says, and I pass all the items over to her. We’ll have to try to get the rest of the set, as there are also enchantments that unlock when the complete set is worn, including the pauldrons, ring and talisman. The last piece of loot that we did get is a dolovite ingot.
Supposedly dolovite is a light infused magical metal, of a similar grade to Trotium, the material my axe is made of. The ingot has a high resistance to light based attacks, and provides a wisdom boost of +10. I hand it to Ivy for her to eat, to hopefully finally fill that material bonus slot. As she finishes eating the metal ingot, a window pops up.
I’m glad that it asks for confirmation before it adds the material bonus in. I look to Ivy to make sure and she nods, so I click the yes button. With that done, we spend some time relaxing and cuddling, watching some tv while we wait for our resources to regenerate. We eat some snacks and Skylar checks on Dave before we go back to the grind.
The next dungeon up is the demons dungeon. As I tap the button, we’re immediately transported to a large open area, with a volcano in the background, lava flowing down the large mountain. A growl rips my attention away from the well done scenery and to the enemies we’re supposed to be facing.
The first thing that I register is that there are multiple types of enemies. The second thing I register is that they all look ripped straight out of Doom. There’s a small horde of them, and I use observe on them to confirm my suspicions. Imps, possessed and two revenants. I call out orders as the demons growl again.
“The demons with the claws and glowing yellow eyes are imps. They’re quick and throw fire, be careful of them. You handle those Skylar. The demons with no eyes are the possessed, they’re slow and use melee attacks, they’re the least dangerous here, we’ll leave them till last. The two with the things coming off their backs, they’re revenants. They fly and shoot missiles. Mia, you and I will target those first!”
That’s all the time we get for strategy before the imps rush forward and the revenants take off. The possessed stumble forwards, not being too much of a threat. Mia takes off and makes straight for the revenants. I run forward and to the side, managing to dispatch one of the imps with a precise cut from my axe. Skylar stands her ground, engaging the imps with her magic.
I manage to draw the attention of some of the horde to take the pressure off of the umbramancer, while still aiming for the revenants. Mia catches up to them easily as the first missile is loosed by one of them. Mia dodges it and it spirals off harmlessly into the landscape. I quickly aim and fire an ice bolt, freezing up and damaging the mechanism for its jet pack.
The revenant struggles to stay in flight as the jet pack sputters and coughs. Another ice bolt and the jet pack fails completely, the demon plummeting out of the sky. Mia focuses immediately on the other one, flying past it and dragging her sword across the launcher sticking out from over its shoulder. The piece of machinery is sliced clean off, and tumbles down to the ground below.
I engage the revenant on the ground, firing a mana bolt at the demon, then rushing forward with my axe at the ready. It fires a missile and I’m too slow to dodge. I activate mana shield and let my mana absorb the resulting explosion. “310 mana, not bad.” I comment, turning the skill off and sending a wave of freezing magic towards the demon.
It slows down a bit and I move behind it, leaping upwards and cutting through the air with my axe, the weapon slicing through one of the launchers on its back. I waste no time on the landing, jumping straight back up again and slicing the other launcher off, even as the demon turns to swipe at me. I manage to get the second launcher and disable its most dangerous attack, but I can’t dodge the swipe and I get knocked back through the air.
I manage to land on my feet, stumbling slightly with the momentum. Beside me, the other revenant drops out of the sky, courtesy of Mia. I sprint back to take care of my target, knowing that my girlfriend can handle hers with ease. Across the landscape some 50 metres away, Skylar and Ivy are managing to handle half of the horde, with the other half focusing on Mia and I.
The possessed stumble towards us slowly, not being much of a threat on their own. The imps throw fire at us, and both Mia and I find ourselves having to dodge fireballs while we try to take out the revenants as quickly as possible. I’m the first to succeed, with my revenant dissolving into dust under a barrage of spells and a few well placed cuts of my axe to cripple it.
Looking at Mia and noticing that she’s close to winning her fight, I decide to help Skylar and Ivy. Running towards the collection of fire throwing imps, I cleave through a pair of them, dodging a fireball from a third. The fireball in question strikes one of the other demons, damaging it somewhat, but not substantially. If nothing else, this dungeon is great to train my fire resistance.
Some of the imps scatter at my sudden attack. I cut down some of the possessed, skillfully avoiding their slow attacks. A fireball that I missed hits me and dissipates, taking 43HP with it. I retaliate with a mana bolt, and send out a wave of frost towards the bunched up enemies.
The mana bolt strikes true and the enemy dissolves into dust. The wave of freezing magic forms small icicles on each of the numerous demons, slowing them down in their movements. I turn and run past them to where Skylar and Ivy are still facing down the other half of the horde, and look like they’re struggling a bit.
I get to them just in time to cut down a possessed enemy that was about to hit Skylar’s exposed back. She nods in thanks, and I slow down the horde with more waves of freezing magic. The slowing pace of the combat allows Ivy and Skylar to keep up easier, as we work together to move through the demons.
Mia finishes her fight with the revenant and comes over to help us. Mia and I work together with Skylar and Ivy to tear through the rest of the horde. It’s an absolute slaughter that’s over within minutes of Mia joining us. We do our best to leave some enemies for Skylar to face, but it’s clear that she’s struggling a little with them.
Twice, she gets hit with a fireball and has to retreat from the fight to be healed by Ivy. I can see the slight bit of frustration making it’s way onto her face each time, but this isn’t her fault. She’s severely underpowered for this fight and based on levels alone, it’s a miracle she’s made it this far. The armour we gave her is also helping, although it very clearly does not complement her power set.
After we’ve just about finished with the horde, we take a breather for a bit. We leave one possessed demon alive and slowly kite it around the fighting area while we rest for a couple of minutes and recover some resources. Once we’re ready to face the boss, we dispatch of the final enemy and ready ourselves for the incoming fight. A rumbling signals the spawn and from nowhere, the boss stomps out into the area.
Big demon?
