Cut down the vines

You hold your machete high and begin chopping the vines and vegetation away, you strike repeatedly left, right, left right. You make a considerable amount of noise and brace yourself for the worse, but nothing comes. You have cleared a decent pathway now and continue to expand it. After making your way another fifty meters you hear a deep and guttural growl about thirty meters behind you. You peer around your shoulder to see what looks like a huge ape like creature, about 12 feet tall and covered almost entirely in fur. It bares its fangs at you and begins to charge. In your panic you run ahead while swinging at the vines until you come to a clearing and what looks like two possible paths you could take. You hear the heavy foot steps and deep breathing of the creature behind you.
