Chapter 4
by HistoricoPublius
Where will you begin your day?
Consult with Veritex, your estate manager.
Business is the heart of any noble family's wealth - at least until they've established enough to sustain themselves, but you're not quite there yet. You decide to head over to the offices of Veritex, your family's estate manager, to see what information he can offer you about your land. Threading your way through the city, you make your way to the small, cramped business district where his offices are.
Veritex is a thin, balding Gaulish man with blonde hair. As you enter his office, he's inspecting a series of wax tablets, frowning. He rubs out the writing on one of them after making a few notes, and begins to pen a reply when he notices you making your way through the towering stacks of scrolls that take up most of the floor in his office. "Ah. Young Lord Gaius. It's an honor. Happy birthday, I suppose." You nod cordially. Veritex isn't exactly warm and friendly to you, but the two of you have always had a grudging respect for each other. He's a conservative old crank, in a lot of ways, but he's duty-bound (and interest-bound) to serve you, as your father paid him for years and you imagine that his fortunes are now quite linked up with yours. He hates taking money out of the estate, though...
"Thank you, Veritex," you say with a smile. "I just had a few quick questions for you."
What do you ask Veritex?
