Consider your options

The Home Guard is retreating in a tight formation down one of the central boulevards towards the citadel leaving the streets cluttered with the bodies of fallen soldiers. Some of the fallen men are Home Guard, but the vast majority are men like you who died as soon as they entered the city.

You didn't come to Athenapolis to win honor and glory in ****. You came to fill your pouches with gold and your belly with rich food and wine. In return you would be happy to empty your seed into as many of the fine women of Athenapolis as possible. Unlike the mercenaries who had quotas for the number of women they can take as slaves, as a regular enlisted man of the Armies of Hellopolis you could in theory lead a whole string of captives to the slavers and then go back for more.

The amount of time and effort spent on planning how to strip the city of every last bit of wealth was probably even greater than the time spent planning the siege itself. Soft men in silk robes hunched over maps of the city for weeks pointing out rich targets with fat fingers that never once held a spear. The elite troops were assigned the rich mansions and towers of the aristocracy. You know your cohort was assigned to a more modest square, but with your officers missing you have no idea where you are supposed to go. Even if you did why should you limit yourself to one neighborhood when the whole city lies before you?

A wide street runs along the inside of the city wall. You can see at least two barricades being assembled out of a collection of furniture, carts bales of cloth goods and other assorted goods that block easy access down this street. A small alley lies directly ahead of you and more streets lead deeper into the city.

From outside the walls you can see the next wave of soldiers approaching the breach if their officers find you sitting here they will certainly press you into service with their troops. Also a gang of street rats is approaching the site of the battle, no doubt they will glean any valuables from the bodies lying on the pavement. Do you want to look in the alley, try one of the streets or search the dead bodies for valuables?
