Chapter 526 by Fiftyfiftyfifty Fiftyfiftyfifty

What do you do?

Check the smithy before bed.

The rest of the evening continues as normal. After dinner, you wash up, and soon it'll be time for sleep. It would be best to turn in early. Once again, it's going to be yet another long series of days, and the last thing you want to be is exhausted from the start. Everyone is packing their bags in advance--rations, torches, and more--when you leave the manor and make your way towards the nearest weaponsmith to inspect your cracked sword. The sun is setting, and there's a woman working outside on the deck in front of a roaring forge.

She has long orange tied back into a ponytail, and apart from boots and a pair of goggles above her forehead, she's wearing nothing but dark blue overalls with a grey apron over top--no shirt beneath it. Sweat pours down from her forehead, and her body is specked with droplets from the intense heat of the flames. The front of hers overalls tightly hug her perky chest, though with that as her only garb, the side is something to behold.

Her body is shrouded by steam as she drops the metal into water. She picks it up with a pair of tongs, and places it on the table beside her. That's about when she notices you standing there. Once again, she wipes her forehead with the back of her arm, lets out a long sigh, and then gives you a smile. "Hiya there," she says. Her voice is loud and friendly.

You wave back and put your foot down on the first step to the deck. "Hey. Are you still open? I don't need anything made. I might just need something repaired."

"Well come on up. I'll take a look."

As you make your way over, you draw your blade, and hold it out across both hands. "It's a magic weapon, but there's these strange cracks..."

"I see." She leans down and eyes it over closely. "It's definitely not ordinary for a magic sword to simply break, but that doesn't look like battle damage at all. It would have chipped or cracked more around here along the edge, or maybe even around the hilt if it wasn't made so good. This looks more like paint chipping. Like, an exterior skin cracking away. May I?"

"Sure." You hand it over to her.

She swings it around a few times. "This is a great sword. Interesting. Well, the bad news is that repairing something magical is a little more complicated than normal. The good news is this doesn't seem damaged at all. There's no way these cracks could grow from regular use. It really doesn't make a lot of sense. I feel like the worst thing that could happen is you'll have a sword that looks kinda crappy."

"I guess that's a relief."

She places it down, and taps it with her hammer. "It's more solid than any steel I've been working with. I can't imagine this breaking anytime soon. But if you're really concerned, I could try to touch it up. It'll be awhile though. Something like this might be more of a project than it'll be worth to you."

"Thanks for the honesty. I'll just deal with it for now."

"Sounds like a plan." She hands it back. "Let me know if you need anything else. Otherwise I'm closing up for the night. I need a good, long shower after today. I really pushed myself getting an order done, and now I'm sweating like a pig. Sorry! I'm just rambling about myself now."

"It's fine. Thanks again. If I need some actual smithing work, I'll be sure to stop by."

Weird, but these are the cards I've been dealt. I can't stress too much about it. It'll be some time before we face Sa'dis anyway. If it doesn't get worse before then, I imagine it won't get worse ever. And if it breaks before then, well... shit. I guess I'll get a new weapon.
