Chatting it up

“So…” Alexa said sitting awkwardly. “H-how old are you?”

“I’m 21,” Katie said. “Almost 22. August 11 is my birthday.”

“Oh really? I just turned 22 actually,” Alexa said. “My birthday is June 20th.”

“Happy birthday,” Katie smiled.

“Thank you,” Alexa said. “So um what are you gonna do in California?”

“I’m visiting family,” Katie said. “What about you?”

“I’m here for an internship,” Alexa said. “Down in Silicone Valley.”

Katie nodded. “Wow, that’s cool. Who you working for?”

“A new company called Venus,” Alexa said. “They specialize in computer programming and hardware development. I’m going in as a tech intern. Basically in charge of fetching coffee, but also there’s supposed to be some hands on training dealing with python and pc building and that sort of stuff. Both software and hardware.”

Katie blinked. “Wow… that sounds like a lot,” Katie said blushing. “I studied English… took a 3 year program and finished early. It was tough.”

“That’s cool,” Alexa said. “What do you want to do with it?”

“I dunno. I thought about teaching, but I’m not good at communicating like that… so maybe I’ll look at a writing job or something. My aunt wanted me to visit her though. We’re supposed to talk about plans for the future and yada yada,” Katie said.

“You must be close to your aunt then,” Alexa said.

“Sort of,” Katie said. “She’s been paying for my college program. So I guess she wants to make sure investment was worth it.”

“Any siblings?” Alexa asked.

Katie shook her head. “I’ve always wanted a sister, but I’m an only child.”

“Lucky, I have a younger sister and older brother. Both can be annoying in their own ways,” Alexa said. “I had to share a room with my sister for 5 years before I was able to convince my parents to let me have the spare room. It was smaller, but it was at least my own space.”

“Excuse me, sweeties,” a flight attendant said. “Would you like anything to drink?”

Alexa asked for an apple juice while Katie asked for water.

Alexa and Katie talked more and more, getting caught up as dinner was served. They shared their food with each other as they chatted, ranting about college and other stuff. Both girls were getting comfortable but both also realized it was about time to change into their night time wear. Neither knew that the other had the exact same intentions.
