Chapter 3
by jessi010111
What should Rebecca do about the message?
Call the police!
Rebecca knew there were a lot of creeps in the city, and she didn't want to take any chances with anyone if they'd been "observing" her. She looked over the e-mail again, to gather the facts into her head. She wished there was more information here to go on... the story didn't really sound like something the police were going to prioritize. Regardless, what other choice did she have?
Rebecca got up from her desk and walked to her bedside table to get her phone. She picked it up, and found the police station's number in her contacts and dialed. After ringing about 8 times, the call was finally answered. Rebecca had been expecting a pleasantly-voiced receptionist to answer, but was instead greeted by a heavy and raspy breathing.
"Hello, Ms. Williams." The voice said, "Do not be alarmed. I have taken precautions from you overreacting to my offer and contacting the police. I can assure you that you are perfectly safe." Rebecca couldn't HELP but be alarmed, but she was too confused and nervous to say anything. The voice continued, "I cannot divulge any details over the phone; there are many people and factions out there attempting to take advantage of my offers for the wrong reasons, and many will stop at nothing. This is why it remains imperative that you tell no one about this offer."
Rebecca was still stunned. She wasn't sure if this was a joke or not, but she was SURE she had dialed the right number, and she doubted the police would go in on a joke. She decided to play along. "Why have I been chosen for something so important?"
"I cannot explain anything over the phone, I apologize..." the raspy voice sounded genuinely apologetic to Rebecca, "Please, come to the address we provided as soon as you are able, and I promise all your questions will be answered. This is a great opportunity for you, Ms. Williams, you will not want to pass on it." And with that, the phone went silent, and the call was disconnected.
Rebecca looked at her phone in disbelief, sat down on her bed, and began to contemplate what this could all mean. She double-checked her phone to make sure she had dialed the correct number, and sure enough, she had. This seemed a little elaborate for a scam, especially targeted at her. She didn't really have any money or anything of value. She just needed to decide what to do now that she'd been contacted a second time.
