Chapter 15 by bobbobbobthethir bobbobbobthethir

Who do you support?

Call out this bullshit

“… actually, nevermind. Nobody’s correct. You all realise that there’s enough space in Foucault’s claims to negate anything you want right? It’s the entire point of post-structuralism. So all your quibbling and nit-picking over the specifics of what Foucault meant is pointless.

“I see things this way. If you want to have sex, then fucking have sex! If I think you’re hot,” you say, meaningfully looking at the girls in the room, who are staring rapt back at you, “then at some point I’m going to discover if you think the same of me. It doesn’t have to always be so complicated and tied to some greater state or societal ****. Sure, those things influence my decision on some level, but the choice ultimately rests with me, and I think that’s the most important thing. Anyone disagree?”

Silence takes over the room for a few long seconds, and as most people shake their heads. Lisa gives you a coy smile that you can’t get a read on, but it seems that you’ve won over the classroom for the moment. Then, the professor begins laughing.

“Brilliant, just brilliant Alex. Somebody always makes this point in class and levies this critique against the authors we read, but I think this is the first time it’s happened quite this early. I’m more impressed by the fact that you’ve seemingly managed to persuade the classroom too - or at least cowed them into silence. Ladies, you are more than free to disagree with him if you’d like,” the professor says, opening the floor to dissent.

When none is forthcoming, he continues on. “Well, I guess the burden falls to me in that case. Look, the post-structural approach isn’t as one-dimensional as Alex makes it out to be…”

The class continues on as the professor dives into his own take and analysis on the readings, and you find yourself nodding in agreement with much of what he says, despite your outburst. Charmaine throws you a sidelong glance every once in a while, and you pointedly ignore her. She’s had guys pining over her all her life, and you know that by giving her attention you’ll lose her immediately. The only way you can have a shot with her is by continuing to play it cool.

Finally, the class comes to a close, and Lucille tugs on your arm.

“Hey, great comment earlier today in class! I’ve never thought of things that way before,” she says.

“Oh, it was nothing much,” you say. “I figured the classroom needed a fresh perspective - I actually agreed with your comment, for the most part, and it seemed like the professor was supporting you too.”

“Mhm,” Lucille says, slipping her bag over a shoulder. “See ya!”
