This is typically used as “walking a mile in their shoes” type of story. Sometimes the two people swap places, other times only one person is swapped(but that’s usually possession).

In any case this transformation requires two people to change into each other. Typically the story revolves around both parties instructing the other how to pass off as the other. Sometimes they might have sex or masturbate to experience how the other half lives, especially true if they swap genders. It’s also possible that the people did this on purpose.

If only one of the people did this on purpose it could result in the person using this so they can have sex with the other’s significant other.
