Emma looked on in shock and disbelief as the stranger advanced on the proprietor. Ramon got up from his desk and laughed nervously.

"Yes, yes!" he stammered, looking back at Emma. "My apologies, miss! I must attend to this other customer. I will be right back!"

Ramon and the imposing stranger disappeared into the back room. Emma could hear them speaking softly, the stranger's tone accusatory, Ramon's conciliatory.

Emma started to have second thoughts about this particular enterprise.
