Bewilderment ensues

Since we had grabbed groceries when we got into town, I decided to make something simple for supper, just some chicken which Kylie had thrown in the cart.

As I was cooking, I overheard a conversation between Paige and Mary. I normally wasn't one for eavesdropping, but then I heard Mary mention me, and my ears perked up.

"No, I don't think he would've done that on purpose", Paige said.

"Purposeful or not, I'm a little bit grateful that it happened like this", Mary said.

What on earth were they talking about? Didn't do what on purpose?

"Grateful?" Paige asked a bit loudly. I guess she must've become a little wary of people overhearing them, so she lowered her voice after that and said, "What about Chris though? You two broke up like only a month ago!"

"Eh, Chris can go eat a dick", Mary said in a nonchalant tone. "Grace told me that she's pretty sure Chris was cheating on me this whole time, and he was trying to get me to break up with him".

"Okay, but what about Becca? Surely she won't be happy about that".

I'm intrigued now. I mean, I was before, but now that they're involving Becca in...whatever they're talking about, it's just gone a step farther.

"I have my ways of getting to her", Mary responded, again nonchalantly.

"Yeah, you're her sister and all, but that doesn't mean she's going to cave to you, especially when it does with John", Paige said. It appeared that she was speaking as the voice of reason here, especially with Mary's indifferent tone.

"Well then maybe I should go after John first. He's generally more agreeable".

"While that may be true, maybe you shouldn't do it at all. Leave John and Becca alone, they're happy where they are."

"Eh, I'm sure I can do something within the two months that we're here. Better yet, I'm sure I can do something while maintaining the peace with Becca".

"Just don't get yourself killed", Paige said, sounding exasperated.

That was the last I heard from them. Left to contemplate by my own, I tried to reason what Mary was talking about. And why did Paige say to leave me and Becca alone? There was no way that she was planning something drastic with our relationship, right?

This is why I was hesitant in bringing all 9 of these women along. Even though they're past their high school drama phase, there's still a chance that one of them is going to do something, and it seemed like Mary was going to be that person.
