Being disciplined

"Yes, Mrs. Krouss," Tanya said, as she went back stage and waited. She was confused. She was doing what she was told, but why so precisely?

Mrs. Krouss found her where she was waiting and started scolding her. "I don't know what that little display was, but you had better explain yourself, young lady!"

"You told me to get into character, and that's what I was doing. Aldonza was a prostitute, so I wanted to make myself fully be her."

"Yes, but it's a play! The audience knows she's a whore. They don't need to see her tramping herself all around to know that!"

"All right, Mrs. Krouss. I'm sorry."

"Now, get back on stage and try again. Get into character, but stick to the script."

"Yes, Mrs. Krouss."

Tanya walked out on stage and gave a perfect performance. No one who saw that rehearsal would have known that she wasn't Aldonza, the woman who would become Dulcinea. Mrs. Krouss approved and said, "Wonderful! Okay, everyone go home, and we'll pick up again tomorrow!"

Tanya then proceeded home. As she was walking out to her car, Brad came up to her and said, "Tanya, wait up! What was that little show back there during rehearsal?"

In a thick Spanish accent, Tanya responded, "I cannot help it. Zis who I am, and who I will always be."

Thinking this is strange, Brad says, "Hello? Earth to Tanya! We're not in rehearsal anymore! You can go back to normal again!"

"What are you talking about?" she responds, still in a Spanish accent. "Zis is normal for me!"

"Hey! Snap out of it! Go back to being Tanya!"

Immediately, Tanya dropped the accent and said, "Okay, if you say so."

"Tanya, what was that about?"

"I don't know, I couldn't help myself. It's like I had to stay in character until you told me not to, then I had to return to being myself."

"Really..."
