Chapter 3
by Xenolan
Where shall you go?
Before going anywhere, why not disguise yourself as a commoner?
{if Fortunes = 1}Just as you have finished making arrangements with Hanzi to watch Steelheart, Lady Trina reappears from the Romani camp; it seems that you will not be able to just sneak away! That is probably for the best, however; you don't really want the whole City Watch looking for where you might have run off to.{endif}{if Maid of Steel = 1} Of course, you can't help but look at Lady Trina in a new way, thanks to Talaitha's prophecy - but you quickly put such thoughts from your mind, it would be best if Trina did not sense anything was amiss!{endif}
"Lady Trina," you say to your guard, "{if Fortunes = 1}you seem to have enjoyed your time with the Romani?"
"Indeed, Sire," she replies. "It is good to re-make their acquaintance... I came to know a group of their people in my youth, and I believe that some of them are actually here among this camp. I made plans to return later, when I am off-duty."
"Tell me...{endif} as commander of the City Watch, is it your opinion that we have provided adequate security for our visitors? If trouble were to break out, do you believe it would be contained?"
"I am certain of it, Sire. The temporary expansion of the Watch, and Captain Navarre's advance planning, has made this place as safe as it can be. Of course there will be incidents, but there is no doubt in my mind that we can deal with anything that arises."
"Good," you say with a firm nod. "Then, I believe I will walk among the people; I wish to spend at least some of my time experiencing this festival with them."
{if Fortunes = 1}"Our horses should be safe enough here, Sire," Trina suggests.{else}"Our horses may be left at the River Mill, Sire," Trina suggests. "We are using it as the local headquarters for the City Watch during this event. The owner of the mill has been compensated, naturally{endif}. We may then proceed on foot if that is your desire."
"Allow me to clarify my intentions, my lady. I wish to walk among our visitors as one of them, a commoner. I will leave behind my ceremonial adornments and all that identifies me as a King, along with Steelheart."
"I can assume commoner's garb as well, Sire."
When you had envisioned yourself walking around the festival as a commoner, you had not considered that Lady Trina might accompany you; after all when you actually were a commoner, you didn't have a Kingsguard! However, perhaps it would be more prudent to allow her to remain at your side. She could certainly pull off the disguise, as Lady Trina is no more noble by birth than you are; she has plenty of experience in a life without shoes or a full pouch of gold. Of course, having her accompany you would limit your ability to engage with the women at the festival... it is unlikely that Trina could pass for your sister or other member of your family, so the most plausible cover for her to assume would be as your wife.
Do you want Lady Trina with you?
