Chapter 3
by Stalagg
Hit a bar or get drunk at home?
Bars made you nervous, better head home
On second thought going to a public place like a bar with all the valuables you were carrying around wasn't that good of an idea. If someone bumped into you they'd know immediately you were a pickpocket and they'd let the entire bar know and probably kick the shit out of you and they'd call the cops on you and you'd-!
You took a deep breath through your nose to calm down. Last thing you needed was to get yourself worked up. Instead of worrying about being surrounded by people you didn't know you were better off going back to your place for a drink instead. The booze was cheaper and if you passed out you didn't need to worry about anyone trying to fuck with you. With that in mind you made your way down to the subway to catch a ride back to your side of town.
____
Setting the numerous locks on your apartment door you gave a relaxed sigh. Nothing like coming home after a hard day's work. Smiling you felt your shadow taking your coat for you and clearing up some of the clutter on your dingy couch. Your shadow was your own personal housekeeper who was more than happy to make your life easier, it stretching across your home and performing numerous chores and tasks at once.
Making dinner, running a bath, setting out your pajamas, feeding your fish, vacuuming the carpet, all the while you collapsed on your couch to get some well deserved rest. Your best friend was the perfect butler!
On the coffee table before you the day's ill gotten goods were then poured out onto it and separated by what they were. Wallets, checkbooks, jewelry, watches, and loose change were piled before you. Only exception being cell phones and those were due to the risk of being trackable. Hey you were paranoid but that just meant you were careful. Now organized you began sorting through the numerous wallets to see what the haul truly was worth.
Twenties, fifties, and a shit load of ones were what you mostly found. Given the use of credit cards (which you planned on shredding) it was no surprise few people carried around ample amounts of cash on hand. Still there was more than enough here to call today a success and the pawn shop would only offer more for anything you didn't feel like keeping.
As you sorted through a new wallet you spotted a photo which caught your attention. Blonde hair and blue eyes gave her away as that same lady who glanced your way on the street. She was standing next to a massive suited man and they both were smiling happily. What was catching was the symbol written in the bottom left hand corner, it being a large T and two Ms. As you pondered the meaning of the symbols you noticed a second photo tucked away behind the first. It was folded in such a way that if someone were to remove the first picture it would remain firmly stuck behind the first where no one could see it. Your eye for detail though caught the trick and as you unfolded the photo you suddenly heard three hard knocks on your door.
Both you and your shadow stopped dead. Nobody ever came to your door. Only your landlord knew you lived here thanks to falsifying your tax info so nobody had your address. You glanced back to your shadow with a worried expression and it only offered you a shrug before dropping everything it was doing to snake under you again. Standing up and straightening yourself out you walked over to your apartment door and looked through the peep hole.
Who is it?
