Chapter 2

Whose story do you follow?
Background and Characters
Q: So what's Sprung?
Titled Sprung: The Game Where Everyone Scores, Sprung was Ubisoft's second attempt for the Nintendo DS during an early point in the console's lifetime. Part dating sim, part adventure game, and an attempt to craft a romance drama game for the Western market, the game now spends a lifetime of obscurity in bargain bins.
Players can take the route of either Brett or Becky, two best friends on a ski resort holiday with their other friends, and try to hook up with dates before their week-long holiday ends.
Q: What's wrong with it?
To be fair, the game tries to have its good moments, one of which being the ability to spray mace in the face of almost every character you encounter. On the downside, that's about all the positives you can say about the game. Unintuitive decision-making and lackluster writing meant that players would repeatedly make the wrong choices and result in a game over. Multiple scenarios, a good number which feel completely tacked on and have no consistency, sanity or point whatsoever, make this a frequent occurrence. While the game gives you bonus art for item collection and scene completion, inherent bugs prevent the player for ever hitting 100%.
But most notable of all, the game is miserably linear. True to its title, all the characters end up dating at some point, but neither route has a wide range of ending choices. True, it's a T-rated game, yet the script delights in being a complete cocktease, reinforcing its linearity. To underscore the above point, one "mission" results in an immediate Game Over if you choose to follow two local girls to their room and have a good time. (And this is supposed to be a dating sim? Really?)
Q: Is there anything actually good about Sprung?
You get to spray mace into everyone's eyes and watch them scream in agony.
...Oh, all right. For all the clusterfucks that make the game feel rushed, incomplete and insincere, the visuals don't look too shabby for a 2004 DS game, and it has its funny moments and dialogue. The characters are also decent eye candy despite a couple being pretty fucked in the head thanks to poor scenario writing.
Seriously, though, Becky's inappropriate laughing face whenever she maces anyone will never get old, if anything else.
Q: Where can I get some idea of what the game's like?
The Let's Play Archive has a few ancient playthroughs of the game below:
http://lparchive.org/Sprung-(Brett)
http://lparchive.org/Sprung-(Becky)
So you don't have to actually play the game and sift through the chaff. The first link also gives you an idea of what the characters look like.
Q: So why do this at all?
Allow me to repeat a point made above:
Opting to follow two local girls, without underwear, to their room for a good time results in a Game Over. Isn't that reason enough for a written sequel?
Character List:
Brett:
Male protagonist, and best friends with Becky since they were children. Aside from one time when they kissed in the second grade, nothing else has progressed in their relationship.
In the original game both protagonists go around trying to hook up with locals before realizing (surprise, surprise) they've secretly liked each other since forever, but Brett still has the option to eventually end with Becky or her other female friends.
Becky:
Female protagonist. Prior to the original game, Becky broke up with her boyfriend who was found to be cheating on her, giving her the motivation to go on a holiday with her best friends and forget about the whole thing.
Unlike Brett's, Becky's route has some degree of branching paths, but she somehow only ends up romantically involved with Brett or best friends with Brett.
Erica:
One of Becky's friends. Socially awkward and bookish, Erica tends to be a wallflower throughout the whole game, helping to run the resort gift shop. She's secretly had a crush on Brett, but thanks to her social ineptitude and suspicion that Becky also likes Brett, she's never had the courage to admit it.
Kiki:
More "frenemy" than best friend, Becky has somehow managed to remain civil with Kiki over the years, despite the latter having hooked up with most of her boyfriends. Deep down, she's always felt insecure about herself, especially after she was stood up at prom, and this motivates her to sleep around.
Lucas:
One of Brett's friends, and a competitive snowboarder who tries to be a player and ladies' man. Despite earnest attempts to stay faithful, he often bites off more than he can chew, resulting him being dumped over and over by the one girl in the game that finds him cute.
Danny:
Another of Brett's friends, and the goofy one of the trio. Half-baked jokes and schemes are his thing, though somehow, one bonus chapter in the game wins him a kiss from every girl in the game after a bet.
Alex:
Waitress at the ski resort restaurant, Alex plays the part of the alpha bitch who doesn't take nonsense from anybody. She opens up to those who are confident to match her headstrong personality. A fan of music, she secretly finds Lucas's attempts to be manly rather cute.
Leanne:
For some reason, this Asian concierge was born in Alabama, giving her a constant Southern drawl and stereotypical tastes in food. Known as the hottest girl on the mountain and local gossip, she's also hypoglycemic, forcing the player to go on a convoluted fetch quest.
Shana:
A local girl who enitrely revolves around the stereotypical traits of a hippie, Shana is either "far out" in Brett's route or disinterested/high in Becky's story. No, seriously, the game replaces her face with that of a cow at one point. Works as Elliot's photographer.
Conor:
His father owns the hotel and all its facilities, so naturally, he's an asshole who flaunts his status at every possible opportunity. At various points in the game Becky/Kiki date him, only to find out that he's a cheating bastard, too.
Elliot:
Another rich boy, Elliot works in his father's successful fashion company, and is looking for amateur girls for honest modelling work. Best friends with Conor, but unlike him, he's doesn't go out of his way to be a jerk, and is secretly awkward when it comes to asking out the girl he likes.
Sean:
Becky's cheating ex, who (surprise surprise) appears at the ski lodge seeking to make amends.
