What is the number on the door?
Apartment 404
“Apartment 404.” Mary says as she holds the door open and gestures for you to go in. It’s a rather plain room. Mary follows you in. “This is the kitchen,” she says indicating the semi-enclosed area to the right. The refrigerator and stove were an ugly pea green. The cabinets had been painted pink. Still, they were more or less clean and in good condition. The door on the far wall next to the kitchen leads to the bathroom. Although just wide enough to hold the bathtub and just long enough for the tub, toilet and sink, it would be adequate, at least once you hang a shower curtain. The tour continues with the left-hand door on the far wall.
“And this is the bedroom.” Ma points out. The 12 by 14 foot room is rather bare. Rather plain blinds cover the two windows on the far wall. The blinds on the window to the left hang crookedly from a single thread. With a flick of the switch next to the door, the small light fixture between the windows gives off dim light. The pair of sliding doors in the right wall are pushed to one side to reveal a small closet.
Finally, a pair of glass patio doors leads out to a small balcony overlooking the alley. You figure there is just enough room for a couple chairs. With no blinds over the patio doors, there is nothing to keep people from looking into your living room.
“Use the back door to enter and leave. Rent is $500 a month and if you want a parking spot, it’s an extra $50. I’ll call the electric company to get the power switched over to you. Phone and cable can be gotten at West Town Mall. Bikes can be locked to the rack on the loading dock in the back or stored in the basement. Campus is down the alley to the right. The bus stop is a block to the south on Washington.” Mary pauses as to catch her breath.
As if on cue, a knock sounds on the door. You look at your landlady. Mary looks back at you and shrugs. You walk over to the door. Although there is a peephole in the door to the hallway, you don’t bother to look through it. Instead, you simply turn the knob and pull open the door.
“HI!” A tall buxom red head in jeans and a t-shirt steps into the room before you can get the door all the way open. She stands about five foot six and looks to be around a hundred thirty pounds. She seems to be rather average other than the 36DD breasts that stretch her t-shirt to the limit. “I’m Linda, your neighbor in 403.” Your gaze follows Linda’s arm to the door across the hall. The number on the door says 403.
“John,” you answer. You extend your hand.
“Nice to meet you John.” Linda says as she shakes the proffered hand. Even as she shakes you hand, you notice a mischievous glint appear in her eye. “By the way, you dropped this.” Linda extended her left arm. She is holding a piece of clothing in her hand. You feel your cheeks reddened as you recognize the article she is holding.
What does Linda hold?
