Chapter 3

Where does that voice come from?
[DLC] Anara the Mage's origin
She was always fascinated with how magic interacted with the living world, how come with a flick of her wrist she was capable to change the direction of gravity, how she could simply think then decide to not interact with light anymore, how by mumbling a few arcane lines she could transmute one material into another. Anara was thinking that while she was peacefully sitting on the ceiling of the Magi grand library, invisible to the pesky librarian who tried to keep out students from the Master tomes section of the library. And also she was sitting in luxury after turning the ceiling tiles into cushions instead of hard rock.
The purple haired mage couldn't understand why they even have a closed-off section of a magic library, if that knowledge was accumulated, why not share it? Making it inaccessible just makes it more desirable for people to actually get their hands on that knowledge. Anara wasn't a stranger to that feeling, she risked her continued studies in the academy just to seek out some of that forbidden knowledge, but most of the time she was disappointed and found books and tomes that didn't actually hold any useful information, and were just in the "Master" section because the writer was a wealthy or high stature mage. Sure, to publish a book you have to be a person of means, but it seemed to her most of the "Masters" were just people more concerned about spreading their name rather than advancing the research of magic.
Anara isn't humble, but she understood what she knew and would never dare to publish such devoid of content books, like the one she was reading now. "Telekinesis, Teleportation and Apotheosis" by some Arcanist Profolitz. The book speculated about the ability to use telekinesis to achieve mastery over the natural forces, and how that act might resemble divinity, it dealt with the act of ascending to divinity more than actual information. The fact that Anara was now sitting, legs crossed on the ceiling was a clear sign to her the book was absolute bullshit. She could manipulate gravity, she could manipulate mass, but she was still merely human and not a goddess. Even though technically she was the only one, whom she knew about, that could do that, still disproven by contradiction. But she kept reading, she was very much interested in the teleportation part.
"I swear there was someone here" there were murmurs beneath her, "Oh come on, just seal the barrier" another voice answered, Anara's ears perked up, "No living creature could survive the psychic pain for long, they'll be running straight at us at no time" the person continue. Anara looked around her, there were glyphs on the wall, but none symbolized protective wards, some just assured books won't get stolen by destroying the book. Was it just a ruse to scare her out?
She was in the middle of the library, on the ceiling yes, but she could run for it and try to get out before the wards go up, she would need to do it right away, but she was confident in her speed, even without magical enhancement. The book might've been full of empty discussions, but it had one thing that could be huge, Teleportation, Anara just couldn't pass on that opportunity.
She wasn't sure if the psychic pain the keepers talked about would interfere with the needed concentration to learn the spell, if there was any spell actually written. But that would mean she might come up empty if it didn't register in her mind correctly due to the pain. There was no way to take the book out of the library as well, it would disintegrate due to the protective enchantment it had on it. If she was going to do it and risk capture, or not even having the spell, she had to endure the possible psychic pain. The only question is if the risk fits the possible reward?
Is the risk worth it?
