Chapter 4

Who enters?

An old couple.

With eyes barely open, you sneak a peek at the people entering the room. It's an old couple. Halflings. Realizing they are no threat, you sit up, feigning that you just awoke in that moment.

You look curiously at the couple, who now realize you're awake. The man was balding, with grey hair circling around the plane that was the top of his head. He had a thick moustache under a sharp, thin nose, hiding his thin lips which now formed a smile. The woman was a chubby older lady with grey hair tied up in a knot. She wore a pink little dress, loosely hanging over her body.

She held a tray in her hands. On it, there were plates full of eggs, bread and cups of milk and juice. You finally noticed both of their pointy ears and you recognized them for what they are. Hobbits! Of course. Famous for their hospitality and peaceful demeanour.

This means you must be in the Riverlands, the land of the Hobbits. A nice, calm and beautiful piece of the world. One where people would go on holiday, and enjoy time fishing, hiking and enjoying the wonderful Hobbit cuisine.

'Ah you're awake I see!' the man says happily, in a bit of a squeeky voice. 'We were worried you never might, you know!'

You bow deeply and while trying to keep the towel in place, hiding your manhood. 'My sincere gratitude for helping me out in my need and for your concern,' you tell them. Then seriously, you ask; 'Would you please tell me what happened and where I am?'

The halfling woman walks over to you, a frown on her face. She puts the tray on the nightstand and sits you down on the bed. She then holds her hand to your head and feels for something. 'So, you're experiencing memory loss?' she asks.

You think about this for a second. You can't remember much before you were still at home with your wife. After that, everything is quite hazy. 'Yeah, I guess I am. Is that bad?'

'It means you had quite the blow to your head,' she answers. 'But I don't think you've suffered any permanent brain damage. I'll have to check some more, but my guess is that you're memory will come back. Slowly.'

'She's quite the nurse,' the halfling man says, a smile on his face. 'You're lucky. You're in good hands now, otherwise who knows what might have happened. We are the Dongleferry's. That is my wife Hilda and I am Dillidus. I'm the town mayor.'

'I am Brengar Highfoot. And I am very glad to be in your home,' you smile at them weakly. 'If you don't mind my asking, where did you find me?'

'Our daughter found you when she was hunting in the Greenleaf forest. She quickly ran to our little village to get help and some of the men took you to our home.'

'I'll have to give her my thanks then. By your account she saved my life,' you tell them.

'She was quite distressed. She found you without any clothes. Any idea how that might have happened?'

You think hard about this question, **** to find something, anything in the empty pools that is now your memory. But you come up empty. It seems like you went from being happily married, at home to being in a bed, naked, in a strange land. The whole experience is extremely surreal. Instead of answering, you look at the halflings confused. Hilda gives you a pitiful look, making you feel like a lost child.

'It was probably goblins,' Dillidus says. 'They have a hideout in the forest. They're known to rob people of everything they've got. They have been a real nuisance lately. We hope that our guards will take care of them soon.'

'That's good to hear,' you answer. 'They probably robbed me of my armour and weapons. I'm useless without them.'

'If you want, our smith can give you some armour and weapons,' Hilda says, still tending to your head wound. 'They have to be fitted of course. We usually only make armour the size of halflings. In the meantime we can give you some robes to wear. Hopefully they're big enough.

'That would be very kind,' you give her a pleasant smile.

'But for now, we'll leave you to your breakfast,' Dillidus suddenly announces. He has quite a commanding voice, though quite high-pitched. 'Come on, Hilda. We'll be back later with some robes. Get some rest. You are very welcome here sir. Make yourself at home.'

'Why are you so kind to me?' you ask, as the halfling couple moves for the door.

'Because it's in our nature,' Hilda answered. 'Besides, you have a kind face.'

And with that, the walk out the door and close it behind them. Still confused, you try to relax and grab the tray full of breakfast. You find that you are extremely hungry, so you waste no time in attacking the delicious meal.
