Chapter 15 by cphi cphi

What's next?

A walk down to the pier.

After they finished dinner, Kyle suggested that they go for a walk down the pier and watch the sunset. "I've missed it, you know?"
"You don't have to twist my arm. I love living so close to the ocean. Sunsets are so romantic." {if Formation = 1
}Beth suddenly blushed. "Not that I.... I mean...." she looked at her feet. Stop babbling because you have a little crush on Brian's brother. {else
}She smiled at Kyle as he blushed a little. Aw. Does he have a little crush? {endif

They walked at a liesurely pace, even stopping in to a beachcomber bar to get a couple of mai tais and bop their heads to the salsa band. After a few songs, they continued onto the pier. Kyle talked about his time in the service, friends he made, places he'd served. Beth listened politely. Kyle didn't talk about it directly, but he implied that a few of his close buddies didn't make it.
"I'm glad you're back in the world. And I'm sure Brian is, too. He's been real excited to have you back in time for the wedding." Beth smiled as she turned, but she caught a strange look on Kyle's face before he replaced it with a smile.
"Yeah. I am too."
"What's wrong?"
Kyle gave her a look. "Nothing! I'm happy to be home for the wedding."
"Kyle." She stopped, putting a hand on his arm. She leaned back against the railing. "Come on. What was that look?"
Kyle sighed. "This is why I shouldn't drink. I give too much away." He rubbed his buzzed head. "Brian and me... well let's just say things aren't as good between us as he pretends."
"What do you mean?"
"Well...he's being real nice to let me crash at your place, because he probably feels guilty about..." he shook his head. "About Nancy."
"Who's Nancy?" Beth didn't understand.
Kyle gave her a grieved look. "Shit. I guess I shouldn't be surprised he never told you." He looked guilty now. "Forget I said anything."
"Kyle." Beth was feeling something in the pit of her stomach now.
"Damn it... look...." Kyle was conflicted. "Nancy was my high school girlfriend, and went I went away to boot.... you know..." he didn't seem to want to finish the sentence.

}"No Kyle, I don't know. Just tell me." Beth was started to get frustrated.
"They fucked, alright?" It was so sudden, and unexpected, like a slap in the face.
"Wha... no, that's... really?!" Beth couldn't process the information. It didn't make sense. Brian was Mr. Straight Arrow. Everyone called him that. {else
}Beth had a suspicion of where he was going with it. "They...?" Despite her suspicion, it still caught her breath when he nodded. {endif

"Yeah. I caught them when I came home from Infantry training. Almost broke his arm. We didn't talk for over a year after that." Kyle was looking into her eyes now. No more fidgeting and hedging. "Dad finally sat us down at his birthday party and made us work it out. I told him I forgave him, and he told me he'd always have me back. But...how do you really forgive something like that? I guess she was a bit of a slut: she probably started it. Still.... anyway, I try not to think about it, you know? He's my brother. That's never going to change."
"I'm sorry that happened." Beth was stunned. She still couldn't reconcile the man she knew with this story. How could you, Brian?
"Listen, I shouldn't have even... don't think less of him on my account. It's a family thing." He motioned for her to follow. "Let's keep walking. Sun's almost set."
