Chapter 11
by No.Eight
Is your sleep uninterrupted?
A visitor disturbs you
You're woken by someone shaking your shoulder. Waking slowly with a groan, your eyelids creep open. Blearily, you can just make out the face of Fae above you. Judging from the light coming from behind the curtains, it's just after midday.
"Sir John?" she says quietly. "I'm sorry to wake you like this but... I need your help."
Blinking yourself awake, you sit up in bed and stretch. You're a bit annoyed that she's woken you up, but she obviously has something important to say. She looks to the door anxiously as though scared that someone else will come in; but Morrin's the only other person in the tower... right? "What's the matter?" you ask.
Fae sighs. "I wouldn't ask you, but I really have **** in the matter. Sir John, my mistress is not all she seems. She is a powerful sorceress and a part of the Guild, as she has already told you, but she is also rogue. She no longer conducts the research she was dispatched here to carry out but instead investigates dark and forbidden arts."
"You mean-"
"I mean that she is not so kind a person as she first seems. She has commited crimes of the worst sort in her lust for power. She keeps me here against my will; she is very powerful; and I wish to escape. Will you help me?"
You gape at her for a moment, then get up and pace back and forth in the room. "I would help," you answer eventually, "if I thought I could. But how can I? You have already told me that she is very powerful. My sword can do no good against sorcery without the element of surprise, and I have already lost that!"
"Sir John, I am no mere servant, though that is how Morrin makes me seem," Fae says. She is still sitting on the edge of the bed. "I came here as her apprentice, to study under her. I too am powerful in the ways of sorcery, but I am not strong enough to overcome her alone. But she can only concentrate on one of us at a time! If I can distract either of us can distract her for long enough then the other can strike!"
You're persuaded of the possibility, at least. "How do I know you're telling the truth though?" you ask. "You could be the one who uses the dark arts, and you hope to **** her."
"You want proof? Here." She stands and strides to the window. She opens it without any trouble, but the moment she tries to put her hand through it she is struck by a small dart of electricity that shoots forth from an invisible shield. She withdraws her hand again, wincing with pain. "You see? I cannot leave this tower. But if Morrin dies, the spell will be lifted from me."
You're convinced, but before you can say anything more there comes another voice from the doorway. "So, Fae, you've chosen to take matters into your own hands, hmm?"
You turn to see Morrin leaning against the doorframe. There's a cruel smile on her face.
"Mistress!" cries the redhead. "Forgive me, I-"
"Silence, you idiot girl," Morrin snaps. "I heard all. Do not try and fawn over me now."
"Is what Fae says true?" you ask.
"But of course. Does this trouble you? You took so much pleasure in my body last night... Will you now turn me aside? Make your choice; will you have me, or the dull virtue that Fae promises you?"
Who do you back?
