Leticia granted Tom his wish, but she demanded a cruise. He suggested a beautiful, somewhat expensive wooden boat, but she shot him down. She wanted a large, modern river cruise ship, where she'd have access to "modern food" and "entertainment".

He relented, because it gave him an opportunity to see many cities along the Nile.
