A familiar voice

“Need someone the push you?” I heard a voice, I looked around and saw my best friend Lila standing behind me, smiling. Lila was 19 years old and was a small woman with light brown curly hair that reached just above her shoulders.

“Hé” I started and before I could say anything more, she hugged me.

“Oh I’m so glad you are back, I have missed you, you know?

“You did?”

“Yeah, I need someone that lets me borrow their homework so I can copy it.”

“I’m sure that's the only reason.” I joke. Suddenly Lila’s eye’s got sad.

“I was so afraid I had lost you.” She said and I felt the pain in her voice.

“I know you did. But don’t worry, I’m going nowhere. We are going nowhere.”

She smiled. “How about some booze.” She said.

“Now you’re talking” I replied and watched her walk to the kitchen. I feel a small pain in my chest seeing her walk away from me. Lila and I have been friends since freshman year and I always had a crush on her but never dared to ask. Suddenly the pain disappears. Why be afraid of asking, you have superpowers now. What is the worst that can happen? Rejection?

Of course, I couldn’t just say I had superpowers. Because of the, I don’t want to be locked up situation. But why wait with asking, I could be dead tomorrow, that much has been proved. Lila returned with two red cups with a mix of Vodka.

“Cheers,” she says and gives me a cup.”

“Lila, Will you be…”I start before getting interrupted by my mom.

“Oh no, no ****, you’re on medication.” She quickly stands in front of me and takes the cup out of my hands.

“Mom!”

“If you don’t want me to intervene, act responsibly.” She said.

“Responsible, okay,” I repeated and turned my wheelchair to face Lila. “Lila. Would you like to be my girlfriend?”

Lila, who had just taken a sip of booze, choked on her drink. I felt the room around me fall quiet.

“I’m sorry?” she said.

“Would you like to be my girlfriend?” I said. “I like you and I have always liked you. And I don’t want **** knocking on my door for a second time without having asked you to be my girlfriend.”

“Johnathan, I, I like you too, but, eh, shouldn’t there be a first date or something before we are in a relationship?”

“If that is what you want? Sure. How about Friday evening, at eight O clock? I would like to say I pick you up, but I can’t walk, so how about 8 O’clock at my place.”

“Sure,” Lila said, turning red. Everyone in the living room was watching us. I noticed it too. I looked up at the lights and with a bang, they all went out and it was completely dark in the room.

“Oh, dear.” My mother let out.

“Probably a broken circuit.” My teacher said, “I can fix it if you show me the fuse box.” Slowly everyone started talking again and in three minutes the light was on again.

Lila looked at me. “That was very bold of you Johnathan O Conner.”

I smiled: Well bold is going to be the new me” I replied and looked straight at her.
