Chapter 4
by daciasdesire
What happens while Keith is gone?
A discovery at the car.
Keith retraced his path until he was back at the site of the car accident. Keith had to climb in through the smashed passenger's window as the drivers side was now fully covered in snow. He did his best to find anything that would give them a clue as to why Adrian Fields was up his and Ginny's neck of the woods, but everything looked normal. He tried the glove compartment first to see what was in there. It contained all the normal items such as insurance for the car and a speeding ticket issued to Mr. Fields back in his home state Keith checked the back seats but found nothing of interest either. Just discarded take away packaging that any person on a cross-state trek would consume. Before climbing back out Keith made sure to pull the lever to let open the trunk.
First Keith had to scrape away some fallen snow in order to get the boot open. Seems that when the driver had gone off the road and collided with the trees it had caused all the snow collected in the branches above, to fall towards the Earth, covering half the car. The boot was pretty much empty except for a spare tire, car jack and tools and a zipped up sports bag. Keith reached in and pulled the bag to where he could open it. It was heavy but not overly so. He grasped the zipper and pulled it open. Keith was stunned by what he discovered.
Inside the bag was a large pile of sorted bank notes. They were done up in ten thousand dollar bundles and there must have been twenty or thirty of them. If not more. Keith quickly zipped the back up and looked around nervously. No one was there of course and yet Keith wasn't sure what had made him do it. He ran to his car and raced back to Virginia, determine to find out the reason why someone had so much money out here in Garnet's Pass.
"Is he still ****?" Keith yelled out as he entered the house. Virginia came running, brought forth by his noise.
"Yes of course he is darling. What on Earth has got you into such a state? Did you find something at the car?" she asked. Keith lifted up the bag he had brought back and opened it dumping the contents onto the floor. Virginia was stunned. Her eyes went wide and she was unable to talk.
"I'm going to use the radio and find out what's behind all this."
He strode into Virginia and his bedroom while she followed behind. The radio was still on. Every now and then it would crackle. It was something they had had to get used to when they took over the job of rescuers in this cabin.
"South Fork, South Fork, this is Garnet's Pass Rescue. Do you read me?
"This is South Fork. We read you. Boy am I glad to hear from you. We've been try to reach you since you ran those license plates but the weather has prevented all such communication. There's something about that car you found," the voice managed to get out through heavy interference and static.
