Chapter 4
What's next?
A customer asks for help
"Excuse me, Miss?"
Amy looked down from the ladder she was on to see an elderly woman at the end of the aisle with a shopping cart. Next to her stood an eighteen-year-old girl who looked like she wished she was anywhere else right now, judging by the blush on her face as she nervously looked around.
"Can you please tell me which aisle the pull-ups are on?" The elderly woman asked. She then gestured to the girl next to her and added, "They're for my granddaughter here."
"Grandma!" Her granddaughter hissed through her teeth, her face going red.
"Oh, stop it, Ginger." The grandmother said nonchalantly, "Everyone has accidents once and a while."
Ginger let out an exasperated groan as she put her head into her hands. While she did feel a little embarrassed for the girl, Amy couldn't help but stifle a giggle at her expense... Something that did not go unnoticed by the mortified young woman.
"Yes, Ma'am." Amy said with a chuckle, "Pull-ups are going to be on aisle two."
The elderly woman tilted her head in confusion. "I'm sorry, Miss," she apologized, "my hearing aid is on the fritz and I can only hear things that are closer to me. Can you please speak a little louder?"
"I said," Amy began, raising her voice a little louder, "'Pull-ups are on aisle two'!"
"I'm sorry, Sweetie." The old woman apologized again, "The pull-ups are where?"
Ginger stifled a chuckle at this, the eighteen-year-old biting her lip to keep herself from laughing.
Amy, on the other hand, wasn't laughing at all. She growled in annoyance at this old woman, fed up with this bad comedy routine.
"I said," Amy practically screamed as she leaded forward and pointed a hand out in the direction of the second aisle, "'Pull-ups are on aisle tw-' Whoa!"
Amy screamed as she lost her footing, grabbing the shelf as she fell from the ladder. Relief didn't last, however, as the weight from the twenty-three-year-old caused the shelf to break. Amy yelped as she fell to the floor with a thud. The good news was that, since it was a shorter shelf, the fall to the floor didn't break or fracture any part of her... Other than her pride, of course.
The bad news, however, was that, when the shelf had broke, it brought all the jars of baby food down with it. Within seconds, a rainbow of pureed mush rained down, popping open the plastic jars as it coated both the floor and Amy.
"Clean up on aisle four." One of the cashiers called over the intercom as he let out a sigh.
The elderly woman gasped in shock as she slowly walked over to Amy, the younger woman staggering to her feet.
"My goodness! Are you alright?!" The old woman asked in concern.
"Yeah." Amy stated flatly as she wiped the multicolored slop off her face, "Just peachy."
"I'm terribly sorry!" The old woman apologized, "I can't help but feel this is all my fault!"
"Gee, I wonder why that is..." Amy muttered under her breath, but loud enough for the woman to hear.
The grandmother gasped in shock before narrowing her eyes at Amy. "You are a very rude young lady!"
"And you are a stupid, old crow!" Amy spat back as she turned to walk away.
The grandmother scoffed before turning to her granddaughter and saying, "Come along, Ginger! We'll being taking our business elsewhere!"
As the woman and her granddaughter left the store, Amy stomped down the aisle until she reached the back of the store. Once there, she reached out for the door handle to the women's employee locker rooms, only to stop when she heard a giggle from nearby. She turned her head to see Lydia.
It was no secret that, due to her attitude, Amy had made more enemies out of her coworkers than friends. In this case, public enemy number one was Lydia West. Ever since day one, Lydia and Amy never got along, the two often getting into heated arguments. The final straw, however, was when Amy was put in charge while the actual Manager was at a business conference in Milwaukee.
"Coming back from a messy lunch break?" Lydia asked with a chuckle as she placed a stack of onesies onto a sales table. "I'm clocking out in a few minutes. Tell me the name of the place so I don't stop by to get something."
Amy snarled as Lydia laughed loudly at her own joke. "Shut it!" Amy snapped, "I'm going back there to take a long, hot shower! And," she smirked evilly at her rival, "because of that crack, you are going to be staying an additional five hours!"
"What?!" Lydia snapped, dropping another stack of onesies in shock. She then glared angrily at Amy and said, "That's completely unfair! I've been working since six in the morning! And I've got a date tonight!"
"Too bad, so sad. Be sure to tell Franklin to add those additional five hours to your shift, will you?" Amy quipped as she opened the door to the locker rooms. She then looked over her shoulder and said, "This date of yours, is he cute?"
"Yeah..." Amy said with uncertainty.
"Then maybe I should go in your place. He'll have far more fun with a girl like me then he'll ever have with you!"
Amy then let out a chuckle as she walked through the door, leaving Lydia fuming as she picked up the onesies she dropped. This was the last straw! She was not going to take this from that twenty-three-year-old brat anymore! She had half a mind to -
Suddenly, an idea popped into her head. She smiled evilly as she thought of the perfect plan to bring that woman off her high horse and sprawling into the mud...
