Chapter 24 by Colleem Colleem

What's next?

A Team is on a Mission leaving Dean and Jean alone at the School

In my opinion, the weekend full of relaxation went by far too quickly. I started the new week in the best of moods. The first day went by so fast that I couldn't follow it at all. Professor Hank was merciless and yet so incredibly good at explaining the material to us, that we all could still follow his topic. In the lunch break I went out for pizza with my friends and came back just in time for class. When the class was over we met again and sat together with Kurt until late in the evening and studied together for the physics test. The next day we were ready to go. The work was one of the worst exams I had ever taken. Despite the excellent preparation I was not able to answer all the questions. To my relief I was not the only stupid one in the class. Afterwards we sat under the tree in front of the school and discussed the questions. The more I listened the stronger my feeling was that I had not completely failed.

As we were comparing our answers, more and more students joined us and at some point, we were all so confused that we decided to quit. Just in time, because only 5 minutes later Wolverine came stomping towards us and stood in front of us.

"Hey Kiddos! Got some good news for you. Well, for some of you. You get to take a tour with me!"

These words alone made our hearts beat faster and as he was pulling on his cigar he grinned.

"Piotr, Kitty, John and Alexandra. You're on my team!"

"Hey! What about us?" Kurt asked immediately, and Logan grinned as he answered.

"You guys have been screwed. You have to hang out with Scott."

His laughter disappeared when a ray of light passed us by and hit him full on. The beam was so intense that Logan was hurled into a nearby tree and while his skin immediately started to smoke, but was already healing, his cigar had not survived the attack.

"I am really sorry Logan. I must have tripped and fell," grinned Scott who came towards us with Emma, Jean and Hank with him.

"Dude. That was a Cuban!" Logan growled angrily and extended the blades. Even Scott turned pale when he heard this and raised his hands defensively.

"Take it easy Logan! I promise I'll bring you a new one," he said hastily as Logan turned to face him and pulled the blades sparklingly over each other. "I meant a whole box of course!"

Immediately the blades shot back into his arm and he grinned broadly. "Good boy!"

"When the children are ready," said Emma amusedly, then turned to us. "We're going hunting. The government has sighted the Hulk in Canada and wants to hunt him down at last. Therefore, a team of us has been called in."

"The.... Hulk?" stammered Kurt, who suddenly seemed very happy not to be on Logan's team.

"I thought he was a legend," I asked, uncertainly.

"No, Dean. The Hulk is anything but a myth. His real name is Bruce Banner. Every time he gets angry, he turns into the Hulk," Jean replied calmly, trying to take away some of the fear, something she was failing miserably at.

"Sounds like a bad mutation," said Pietr in his heavy accent, but Scott just shook his head when suddenly ACDC's Hells Bells rang out above us. As we looked up we could see a red/golden man flying above us and then landing with a theatrical pose. I was immediately on my feet and stared at him with big eyes. And I was not the only one.

"IRON MAN!"

"Hey. Don't worry! Everything is all right! Because now I'm here!" I heard the voice of Iron Man who suddenly stood right in front of me. The Avengers were the most powerful and famous superheroes on the planet. I never dreamed that I would one day stand in front of Iron Man in person. As I looked around, I could see that I was not the only one who looked at the armored Avenger in awe.

" Stark!" said Logan irritably. "Get to the point."

"Oh. Somebody's got aggression issues," said Iron Man as the visor of the helmet flipped up to reveal the billionaire who, according to urban legend, had built this monster of a suit of armor in a cave with nothing more than a screwdriver and a box of cornflakes!

"You have no idea." Scott grinned before he got serious again. "But he has a point. Get to the point. What do the Avengers want with the Hulk? It's not really your league, is it?"

"Should I really tell that to the kids?" Tony asked in amazement as Jean grinned.

"Some of these kids are able to pluck you out of your armor without any problems, or that what is left of you then. So, would you be good enough to answer my husband's question? Since when do the Avengers care about this? Isn't that Ross' thing?"

"True, but the good general never tells the whole truth. All right. I'll try a little faith, then! Pepper thinks this is a really great thing."

" Stark!"

"All right. Well, he's probably told you that the Hulk is a monster, and to be honest, he's a dangerous person, but he's NOT a monster."

"Tony. We saw the footage from Saskatoon. He destroyed the whole town." Hank said. I had heard reports of a major plane crash that destroyed the city, and I swallowed hard at the thought that a single person could do such damage.

"That's right. But what the good general forgot to mention was that the Hulk himself removed over 200 people from the immediate danger zone while the US military opened fire on the city Centre.

"Are you saying that the US military is firing on Canadian cities?" Scott asked, somewhat confused, and Tony pointed his index finger at Logan.

"Ask the cuddly bear over there if that is so unbelievable."

All the adults looked down in dismay and seemed to agree with him except Emma. She looked at him and crossed her arms in front of her chest.

"You like to hear yourself speak Stark. But why don't you answer the fucking question?"

"To put it simply. The Avengers have more important things to deal with right now than this. We don't have time to deal with it."

"Well, what's so important that it requires your attention? A Playboy Party?" Logan grinned back, strongly grinning unimpressed.

"Sorry, that' not until Saturday. But are you satisfied with a being of galactic power that can eat entire planets out of hunger?"

The way he casually spoke about such a threat not only robbed me of my speech but also Scott and the others. Tony must have enjoyed this moment of speechlessness very much as he savored it amusedly before continuing.

"Don't worry, son. The Avengers and the Fantastic Four are already taking care of the problem! It will be a piece of cake! But well. You all want to become X-Men. ...a Hulk won't be a problem."

"So, you want us to save the Hulk from the military? Let me get this straight. As if Striker didn't have enough things against us already," Logan said and the others nodded at him as Scott said calmly.

" So that makes two teams. You try to find him before the military does and get him out of there. If Tony believes he's worth it, then we'll do it. But if he becomes a problem, we take him out. Team one is comprised of Logan, Emma, Pietr and Kurt. Team 2 is Kitty, me, Hank and you, Billy. Our job will be to create a distraction from the military. Logan will take care of finding and removing Dr Banner."

Like many of us, I was disappointed that I wasn't allowed to come along until Jean came to Scott's side, smiling, and said: "The rest of us shouldn't be disappointed. That you are not allowed to go is due to your abilities. In this situation we must operate under the radar, but someone might think of taking advantage of the absence of our team. For the rest of us this means that we must take care of the students, the school and our friends. To be on the safe side I will stay with you to intervene in case of emergency. So, do not be sad. Your time will come."

"So. That's that settled then! Sorry. I must go. The team's waiting for me. You know what I mean. Nothing happens without me. Come and visit me in the tower if you want an autograph," Tony said in a good mood and with a loud thunder he shot further and further into the blue sky until Will said calmly.

"He has just left the atmosphere and is now heading for a modified Quinnjet... Woah! What was that? They're just gone!"

"Never mind. Don't worry about the muffin. Departure in 20 minutes! Get your things!" growled Logan, it was clear that he didn't like Stark. Finally, his statement was enough to break up the group and I was standing alone in front of the tree, wondering how I could help. Emma finally gathered some of the older students who stayed in school and explained what was expected of us. I was impressed with how efficient some of our forces could be under the right circumstances. Even mutants with seemingly impressive powers were used by the X-Men with merciless precision.

Because of my abilities, I was put in the school wing, as my powers worked best in confined spaces. Even though Emma made it clear that this was purely a security measure and that an attack could be ruled out, she made it clear that it was important. When everyone had left, she stayed with me for a moment and probably felt my nervousness.

"Is everything all right, Dean? Even without telepathy I can tell that you are nervous.

"I think I just realized how dangerous this all can be. I'm worried about my friends... and how little I can do if someone like the Hulk shows up."

" Very good, Dean. That's the first step on the way to becoming an X-Men," she said calmly and put one hand on my shoulder.

"What? To be afraid?"

"No. Worrying about others first. The fear comes later, but it's perfectly normal. Unless you're Wolverine, you're always scared." she smiled.

"Are you taking care of them, Miss Frost?" I asked her uncertainly and she smiled back as she nodded. Suddenly she turned up in horror and looked at the door.

There Jean stood and smiled. "I'm sorry, Emma. I didn't mean to frighten you. I just didn't want to interrupt this speech by making you aware of my presence and acting like a slut again."

Although the choice of words should sound sharp, she was less biting than I had expected her to be. Emma also seemed surprised and raised an eyebrow before grinning cheekily.

"Don't worry, Jean. I won't take away your toys twice!"

"Oh, I'm not worried!" Jean smiled exaggeratedly friendly. There she was again the rivalry between the two. "Dean. You have nothing to worry about. For once, Emma was telling the truth. It takes a lot of courage to admit you're scared. as well as to care more about others. Of course, where she's wrong again is that someone finds her interesting. I mean, sure, if you like Barbie dolls in the Sado Maso look..."

"What did you just say?" Emma snapped at her. "What did Betty Crocker just call me?"

"What do you mean, Betty Crocker?!" Jean growled back and the two of them looked like they were about to go for each other's throats. I jumped in hastily and stretched my arms out to the side. I didn't want to say anything, or use my powers, but simply separate them. But what I had not planned for was the fact that the two of them moved further forward. Before I knew it, I felt one of their great tits in each of my hands. I had managed to stop them, but not quite as I had planned.

"Well? someone's greedy!" Emma grinned happily, and Jean jumped back in shock when she heard Emma's words, she just grinned. "Since your teacher isn't interested, you're welcome to contact me" she grinned and was about to give me a kiss when she was suddenly tossed away. Startled, I looked at Jean who was suddenly on fire. These flames formed a kind of bird right behind her and her eyes had turned into flames. Whatever that power was, it scared the hell out of me.

"Keep your hands-off Dean or I will tear you to pieces" she hissed in a strange voice. I looked up at Emma in horror and saw fear on her face for the first time. She feared this power as much as I did, maybe even more than I did, since she knew what it was.

"All right, Phoenix! Stay calm! It was just a stupid joke," she said hastily, and the flames slowly extinguished as the Jean who was familiar to me returned more and more. She held out her hand and smiled.

"Come Dean. Let's go. Emma's had enough for one day," she said in a good mood and satisfied that she had won the fight. Puzzled by this demonstration of power, I took her hand and followed her. The grin did not leave her face for a single second until she said. "What you saw there was the phoenix. It would take too long to explain everything to you. Let's just say that the phoenix is like... ...it's just incredibly powerful."

"Powerful enough to destroy this world eating thing if the Avengers failed?" I asked uncertainly, and she stopped and turned to me. She looked at me for a long time and then gave me a kiss on the forehead, stretching herself a little high.

"Don't worry. The phoenix is eating Galactus for breakfast. The two have collided several times before! And now don't worry Dean. I won't let anything happen to you" with these words we went into the house and watched the Black Bird of the others rise up and with roaring engines into the clouds. A little nostalgic I looked after the jet and wondered if I could have helped. But before I could get sad I heard Jean at my side.

"What do you think about a movie night tonight? Just you and me?" she smiled, almost embarrassed and insecure.

"I'll bring the popcorn!" I immediately grinned in a better mood and she looked around carefully before bending over to me and giving me a gentle and enjoyable French kiss.

"I'm looking forward to it!" she breathed and then left. My mood had suddenly improved. I expected nothing special that evening, but I was looking forward to the opportunity to spend some time with her without having to manipulate her husband in any way. A simple movie night might have been just what I needed at that moment.
