Chapter 3
by Nemo of Utopia
Next: A New Beginning
A New Beginning (Into The Woods)
You arrive at the edge of a fairly large forest, far away to one side of it you can make out a region of Feilds And Farmsteads and on the other what looks like squat low buildings with mighty wizards towers that belch great plumes of black smoke into the air...
The forest is shaded and cool, crisscrossed by trickling streams and dotted with berry bushes, your wilderness lore identifies some of the berries as edible and you break your fast on a repast of mulberries and black raspberries. You walk through your new domain, finding that it borders a series of small lakes, in addition to the other three areas you already know about, as well as observing it to be rich in game and wildfowl that you can eat.
You find a shelter in the forest, in the form of...
A1: a Large Log Cabin: near the Fields And Farmsteads side, apparently unoccupied, but still full of furniture...
A2: An Abandoned Steel Mill: on the factory side, partially ruined, but it could still be repaired...
A3: a Cave Near The Lakes: cool and dry, just how you like it, but with no real defense against stupid 'adventurers' who would try to steal your hoard: however, you have only explored the front cavern, not the deeper passages, there may be more to find in there...
A4: an Abandoned Wizards Tower: at the center of the Forest, possibly magically trapped, but also possibly containing treasure...
A5: The Hut Of A Witch: near the border of the wastes. This hut is not unoccupied, but the witch offers to let you stay with her indefinitely: as her apprentice...
You also find that these woods are:
B1: Inhabited By A Clan Of Kobolds.
B2: Inhabited By A Steading Of Elves.
B3: Occupied By Another Dragon...
B3.1: Of Your Own Type And Gender.
B3.2: Of Your Own Type But Male.
B3.3: Of Your Own Type But Hermaphrodite.
B3.4: Of A Different Type But The Same Gender.
B3.5: Of A Different Type But Male.
B4: Inhabited by a group of Werepanthers.
B5: Almost Completely Uninhabited. (Except for the witch and wildlife...)
[You may choose up to 2 options for this segment except for B5. If Choosing B3 you must also choose a decimal value for it, which doesn't count as a separate choice.]
As you examine your new residence you discover the following two pieces of good news:
C1: Treasure: Someone has left an easily opened treasure chest in your new home adding 10d10 GP value to your hoard. (You may not choose this option if you chose the witches hut as your home.)
C2: New Friends: the other locals are Friendly, it's up to you to capitalize on this initial swell of goodwill and make a positive first impression and build that into a real alliance. (You may not pick this if you chose the forest is almost completely uninhabited.)
C3: Don't Judge A Home By Its Siding: your new home is much better than it looks at first blush, the cave, for example, might have passages that lead down to an underground brook, and have been trapped by Kobolds in ages past: traps that have simple temporary disarm mechanisms the instructions for which are written nearby in draconic.
C4: Magic Workshop: inside your new home someone has left a fully set up magical workshop for brewing potions and setting up experiments to devise new spells. (If you chose the Witch earlier I Strongly Recommend this option.)
C5: Blade of Heaven: while wandering the forest that first morning, you find a sword sticking out of a random anvil on top of a big rock, for no readily apparent reason you feel compelled to try to pull it out... This proves surprisingly easy...
[You may pick up to Two Items.]
And now, for a bit of unfinished business from the last chapter...
I decided, as QM for this shindig, to go with F4, "Serial Killer"
Now you, the players, must decide what our protagonists 'Type' is, who does she hunt and kill?
G: Gender
G1: Men
G2: Women
G3: Both
H: Race
H1: Humans
H2: Elves
H3: Other Dragons
H4: Vampires
H5: Any Race
H6: Table this till next chapter with a much bigger list.
I: Income
I1: Rich
I2: Middle-Class
I3: Poor
I4: Anyone
J: Justification
J1: Dragon Hunters
J2: Rapists
J3: Disease Carriers
J4: Other Serial Killers
J5: Evil* People
J6: Corrupt Officials
*(This is a loosely D&D based fantasy world, 'Evil' is Objective, not Subjective.)
And as soon as that's out of the way, we'll move along...
