Chapter 15 by DandD DandD

How do you go forward?

7.2 Coin

"It does appear as if you have underestimated me." You reply cooly, raising your head slightly as you stare at the man. "I have already done you a service by investing in your vineyard." Damasus appears as if he's about to cut in but you quickly go on to add, "However, that is only a touch of what I can do. If you support me in the election, I will see to it that you gain what you actually want." Whatever retort he intended to add seems to escape him after hearing your remark. His frown deepens as he cautiously asks, "What do you think that is?" Smiling dryly, you pause for a moment before finally answering, "To continue your current lifestyle without the monotony of politics." Though it had been a bit of a shot in the dark, your assumption appears to ring true. Damasus is unable to mask the brief peak of interest that shoots across his face. Realizing this, he quickly forces a serious expression and asks, "What do you mean?" Proceeding with your instinct, you confidently answer, "The only reason you joined was to gain control over regulating the market." Again your words seem to strike a chord as Damasus tenses slightly. Ignoring this you continue to say, "I doubt an increased tax on wine was necessary. However, I am sure a majority of said tax is currently lining your coin purse."

A somewhat annoyed expression comes over Damasus' face but he remains silent. Knowing your intuition was correct, you end with your proposition, "If you cast your vote for me, I will ensure not only is wine taxed but also heavily subsidized." He studies you for a moment, seemingly trying to gage your authenticity. Finally, he skeptically asks, "Why should I believe you over your competition?" Your smile turns into a small smirk as you reply, "Because I already have the means to help you now." This comment appears to increase the interest you've stirred in Damasus. Noting this, you quickly go on to say, "I will double my current investment if you agree, with no required repayment." Your original contribution had already been fairly substantial, that coupled with it now essentially being a gift is more than enough to tip the scales. With greed in his eyes, Damasus eagerly accepts the deal, even with your caveat that should you not be elected the loan be repaid. After agreeing upon terms, he escorts you back to the front of the estate. Though you're not entirely sure you can trust him, you are putting a great deal of faith in this man. Returning to the library, you can only hope your arrangement will be effective.
