"Well, have you ever thought about...other guys"

Alice looks across from you at the table, stunned. "Seriously?" she asks.

"Yeah," you say, laying it all on the table. "Have you ever actually thought about it?"

"I..." Alice looks like she doesn't know whether to be offended, or confused. "Not...not like that. Not seriously. I mean, I've fantasized, but I'd never..."

You ask her, "you dated around in college, didn't you?"

She says, "yeah, but I wasn't serious with any of those guys. I am with you. We're talking about getting married!" Finding her footing more, she definitely looks like she's coming down on the "offended" side of the equation. You need to recover the conversation, and fast.

You give her a moment, and say, "I'm sorry if that was too much. I should have thought before I said something."

"No," she says, "I asked you, and you told me. And I was the one watching...that video. I just...don't really know what to say. That could...really damage our relationship, if it went wrong, you know? Dating other guys?"

You can't help yourself but say, "no, not dating, necessarily..."

Alice gives you a serious look. "What, just fucking around with other guys, then?"

You say, "yeah, just sex".

"I don't even know what to say..." Alice says. She gets up from the table and walks over to the couch. You know now isn't the time to press the issue, or really even try talking to her. The last thing you want is for this to devolve into a fight, and you've already pushed enough.

Alice silently flips through channels, not watching anything, while you clean up the table, do the dishes, and put away the leftovers for work tomorrow. You start to go to the office, but are interrupted by her getting up and walking to the bedroom. She stops by the door and says, I'll...think about it. But no promises."

Alice shuts the bedroom door. Looks like you're sleeping on the couch tonight.
