Chapter 3
by secretfan444
Who do you say to Ma?
"I want to write my brother."
Your mother sighs accepting that you aren't going to discuss this matter with her, not yet.
"We told her last night" Ma admitted, "She took it well enough. She asked us to wait another day to tell you, but I didn't trust her to actually keep the secret so I thought it best to be direct about it, even if it is your birthday."
You just nod, thank her for being honest, and head outside to ask Ariana about sending out a letter.
She nods to your request and tells you about where you can snag some parchment and ink and how to go about arranging a bird to be sent from the village. By the time you are finished with these tasks you take a long walk to clear your head.
You only return home when it comes time to have your birthday supper. It's all your favorites and you feel your heart warming toward your parents again. Maybe this will turn out alright it's not like you haven't dreamt of going to Camelot your whole life, and even more so since Adam first moved there. You miss him despite how sharp he can be with you.
Adam is a big brother through and through. His body is tall and well muscled, his face hard and masculine, hair the same deep dark brown as your father's though his brown match yours. You admit you are often jealous of your brother. Adam is an accomplished and independent man of Camelot now, despite being only four years your senior. Even before that he was always stronger and more popular than you attracting the attention of most of the women in town and several of the men as well. Unlike you he was no virgin and would openly brag of his conquests. Between his superior attitude and his brotherly ribbing he has always been a pain in your ass. Despite this you look up to him in many respects and he has known to be generous even kind to you at times.
His letter reaches you a few days later and you tear through the seal and unroll it at once to read.
“Alex,
I’m sorry I had assumed mother and father would have told you before now. Yes I am aware of the situation and I admit I was the one who suggested it as an option when they first brought these financial issues to my attention. I know it can be intimidating moving to a city like Camelot (I have of course experienced this for myself) but without a doubt life in the city is far more rewarding. If you’re actually being honest with yourself, then you must know what I’ve always known, that neither you nor our sister would be content farming for the rest of your lives. You’ve always been a lot like me in that regard, always looking upward. Well like me with less drive, experience and charisma anyway. But I think you can do well here all the. Think about it.
Sincerely, Adam"
You sigh. He's right, of course he is. This is a massive opportunity and while living with your brother again may be awkward it sounds like he is fully on board and not begrudging. As you help your family finish the final packing you feel a smile tugging it's way across your mouth as your excitement builds. Adam was right, this new adventure could turn out amazing.
